H&T is an adventure program that is centered on detailed descriptions. Many of the places we go are accessible for people with disabilities. We visit places all over the world. This site contains programs you can download and listen.  We have produced the H&T website and Audio Magazine to be both interesting and accessible for blind as well as sighted people. We hope that you will participate in the H&T experience by telling us about your adventures and accessibility stories. Someone else may want to visit the same places.

The program is hosted by Dave Uhlman, a visually impaired Accessibility Consultant, who gives his unique perspective on museums, nature walks, art shows or just about anyplace he can visit. Dave can put words to the visual so the listener can see and enjoy the experience.

"Hear & There" is a program that promotes involvement in the community. We visit venues with accessible features, provide detailed descriptions, and encourage listeners to attend and participate in the events. This show is one of the few places were venues can publicize their accessibility features to the public.

The show recently visited the Cincinnati Zoo to pet Cheetah cubs. We attended the King Tut Exhibit at the
FieldMuseum in Chicago. One winter day we went for a walk on ancient Hopewell Indian earthworks. We also interviewed the Chicago Art Institute about their innovative "Tac Tiles' tour for the blind.

We invite you to listen to our adventures and possibly find someplace you might like to visit.

Petra, City of Stone, Jordan, 5 min

In this clip will visit the Cincinnati Art Museum and describe an exhibit about Petra, City of Stone, in the country of Jordan. This is a short clip of episode 1 of 3 episodes.

Petra is renowned for its rock-cut architecture. Petra is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The Nabateans constructed it as their capital city around 100 BCE.The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, The impressive eastern entrance leads steeply down through a dark, narrow gorge (in places only 3–4 metres wide) called the Siq (”the shaft”), a natural geological feature formed from a deep split in the sandstone rocks and serving as a waterway flowing into Wadi Musa. At the end of the narrow gorge stands Petra’s most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh (popularly known as “the Treasury”), hewn into the sandstone cliff.

Tom Uhlman Reports from Mt. St. Helens Volcano

WashingtonState

9.23 minutes

This is a report by H&T Correspondent Tom Uhlman. He is on Mount St Helens, Washington state, to take photos for a book on volcanos. He stopped for a few minutes in July, 2010 to describe the devastated landscape 30 years after the eruption. Mount St. Helens began erupting in March, 1980. A large bulge developed on the north side of the mountain as internal pressure inside the mountain built up, but was not able to escape, much like a balloon inflating. On May 18, 1980, the "balloon popped" and a huge sideways blast occurred, blowing the middle of the mountain away on the north side. The force of the blast leveled 150,000 acres of forest and left a huge hole in the side of the mountain. 53 People died.

The Pawnee Earth Lodge at the FieldMuseum, Chicago  15.10 Minutes

In this episode I talk with John Nelson an interpreter at an exhibit of a Pawnee Earth Lodge at the FieldMuseum. Since first opening in 1977, the Pawnee Earth Lodge has been one of the most popular attractions at The Field Museum. This full-scale reconstruction of a traditional Pawnee lodge, true to the originals in form, appearance, and construction, is a fully furnished Native American dwelling that brings to life the traditional ways of this Great Plains tribe. The Pawnee Earth Lodge was recently renovated and relocated within the Native American exhibition halls. The new Lodge stands in a setting that evokes the world of the Great Plains, where the Pawnee historically built these structures. Visitors inside the Lodge will gaze up through the open smoke hole in the roof to see a rendering of stars in the night sky just as the Pawnee star-gazers did as they pursued their spiritual beliefs.

Hear and There Audio Magazine Goes to the Moon

and We Show You How to Follow with Your Fingers!

We describe the book "Getting a Feel for Lunar Craters". It features tactile diagrams of the lunar surface designed to educate the blind and visually impaired about the wonders of Earth’s moon. H&T Correspondent Shawn Klein touches and describes the graphics as the book’s author Professor David Hurd and Host Dave Uhlman talk about the science of the moon.

Episode 1 The Birth of the Moon

In episode 1 we describe what the full moon looks like and we discuss how the moon was formed. Click on the link and the program will begin automatically in a new window. http://bit.ly/rmVuZQ

Episode 2 Crater’s Close-up

In episode 2 we describe craters and how they are formed. We describe one called Tyco which is located on the front, bottom half of the surface. It is a large circle with lines radiating in all directions from its center. These are formed from a meteor’s impact, explosion and the resulting debris. Click on the link and the program will begin automatically in a new window. http://bit.ly/qwXSB3

Episode 3 Touch the Dark Side

In this episode we describe the side of the moon we can’t see. We also talk about a crater which is about ¼ the size of the moon that was only recently discovered. People refer to the“Dark Side” but we explain why that is not true. More accurately it is the far side. The moon is stuck in an orbit with the same side always facing earth. People had never seen it until we launched space probes to look at the back side. We reveal it all in this episode and tell you how you can feel the “Dark Side” for yourself. Click on the link and the program will begin automatically in a new window. http://bit.ly/ssnZo7
